This week on Beyond The Columns, The Colonnade looks at the years biggest election issue next to the War in Iraq and the economic crisis: Healthcare. The fate of the country's current Healthcare plan depends on two men: Barack Obama and John McCain, the presidential candidates whose goals for funding their own healthcare plans are drastically different. With November drawing near it is safe to say most Americans have already picked a side but what do Georgia College students think? Beyond The Coumns asks students Jason White, chairman of the College Republicans, and CJ Cooper, spokesman for the Young Democrats, their stance on the matter and whose plan will succeed and whose will fail.

The current economy has many people fearing a recession as stocks and jobs fall, while prices keep rising. This has become a major focal point in both of the major candidate's presidential agendas. In this week's Beyond the Columns, Tim Graham talks with four GCSU students to see how the economy is affecting their lives as well as who they are voting for.

In this week's Beyond the Columns, reporter Lee Sandow goes live on the scene where Brother Matt, a traveling preacher, spoke to the GCSU students about their beliefs, and how they could save themselves from going to Hell. This week in Beyond the Columns, Editor in Chief Corey Dickstein asks GCSU students what question they would ask the presidential candidates for GCSU's own Mock Debate. The Mock Debate will be held on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Arts & Sciences Auditorium and is presented by The Colonnade, the American Democracy Project, College Republicans, and the Young Democrats.

The bottom floor of Russell library opened it's chairs and couches to students, staff and faculty members for the October 7 Presidential Debate. After furniture was rearranged, the audience settled in for the next hour and a half of questions from a town hall audience. Audience members were interviewed before and after the event for projections and reactions.

In Russell Library on October 2, 2008 students gathered to watch the vice presidential debate, between Senator Biden and Govenor Palin, and discuss their views. Two students, Andrew Kelly, senior, and Thomas Pangia, freshman; spoke of their expectations for the debate, their preferences, and their ideas on campaign strategies. At the closing of the debate, students, Jodie Aldridge, senior, and John Pickworth, senior, discussed what they thought of the debate, what issues they would have liked to hear more of and how much of an impact the vice presidents will have on their final vote for the next President of the United States.

In this week's Beyond the Columns, reporter Ashlee Mooneyhan talks with Heather Holder, the executive director of the Milledgeville Mainstreet Downtown Development Authority. Holder answers a barrage of questions that are off beat from the usual city business. She briefly discusses her musical love affair with alternative rock music, such as Jane's Addiction and The Pixies, and she even touches on what life was like when she attended GCSU several years ago.

In this week's Beyond the Columns, reporter Jamie Fleming sits down with Denise Chambers, a senior art major who is a sexual assault survivor who shared her story at the Women's Resource Center's third annual Take Back the Night, an event that inspires women and men to confront many social issues concerning violence against women.
Denise was one of ten survivor of sexual violence who shared their stories. Here, she tells us why she believes in efforts that combat violence against women and events such as Take Back the Night.

This week, Reporter Katie Huston has professor of history, geography, and philosophy Doug Oetter express his viewpoint on university systems. He is a member of GCSU's University Senate and is the chairperson of the Resource Planning and Institutional Policy Committee of the senate. Listen as he sounds off on his opinion of how a senate should operate and what his goals for the community are.

This week, Beyond the Columns features Dr. Craig Turner. Turner is the Presiding Officer of Georgia College & State University's University Senate. He has served on the senate since its birth in 2002.
He tells us the responsibilities of acting as the Presiding Officer. However, many people do not know what the University Senate is. He explains the inner workings of the senate in addition to determining the common theme of the 2007-2008 year.

In this week's Beyond the Columns, reporter Devin Vernick sits down with Joel Graham, a sophomore economics major at GCSU, is an active personality on this campus. Serving the student body as a senator within GCSU's Student Government Association, Graham plays a vital role alongside his peers; speaking up for the interests of students to GCSU faculty and administration.
Graham believes that debate and the discussion of different ideas and opinions is an integral part of the democratic process and without it, the void left behind would prove destructive to a society.
