As revenue for the state continues to decline GCSU President Dr. Dorothy Leland says the college continues making progress even with the recent budget cuts of 11 percent. This along with other current campus topics were covered Monday, Feb. 23 at the University Senate meeting.

Four budgeted reductions in a single year is unprecedented remarked Dr. Leland at the University Senate.

"Another 1 percent budget cut is significant and will be challenging" said Leland.

Leland also said that the school will make sure that the least amount of impact is shouldered by employees and construction as has always been GCSU standard.

In order for GCSU to receive stimulus money from the government, new endeavors such as the construction of buildings must meet certain requirements. Ideals such as "green" and "highly sustainable" must be integrated into the construction guidelines of future buildings.

Other news at the University Senate meeting included a motion to send a letter of intent to the Board of Regents to establish a doctorate of nursing practice degree program. The new degree would be in collaboration with North Georgia College & State University and would be offered online.

The proposal was submitted by Dr. Judith Malachowski, the nursing department chair. The proposal states that the collaborative program proposal will meet the educational needs of prospective nursing students in two diverse regions of the state who could not be serves as well by either program acting alone.

Malachowski supported the program and spoke of its importance in rural areas.

The American Association of College of Nursing has set a goal of moving all advanced practice specialization in nursing to the doctoral level by 2015. That includes clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwives, and registered nurse anesthetists would have to be enrolled in DNP programs.

The proposed program would represent the first DNP program in central Georgia in a public setting. Adequate facilities are currently available on GCSU campus and the dean of the library has been asked to investigate the cost of adding materials relevant for supporting and online DNP program.

Other motions brought forth at the meeting: the addition of students as voting member of the Academic Policy Committee, a Telecommunications Policy regarding teachers and their cell phones, along with an announcement from SGA's Ryan Green about the SGA election outcomes and homecoming.

Stay tuned for University Senate updates. The next meeting will be held March, 22 at 12p.m. and is open to the public.
